avoid avoid avoid!!

My wife bought me this bike to ride the 20min journey to and from work. Putting the bike together wasn't to bad few tweeks here and there but fine. After a couple of days the handle bars slipped and turned this almost caused an accident on a busy road, this was just one issue. On the first ride I realised the gears at the back where not going to 1st and 6th, so I took it to a shop and the guy said the mec at the back was bent and must have happened in transit. I paid him to fix it and now no problems except the front set of gears will not go to the highest. No idea why. After a few weeks I got use to the flaws and decided it was ok for the money. But then on my way home the rewarding on the right peddle had rounded off causing the peddle to just fall off. I'm no bike expert but I know I didn't force any parts on so it couldn't have been my doing. So in conclusion DO NOT BUY! save a bit more money and go to a bike shop. Look and the bike. Talk to the people who work there and make ur choice this way. Do not trust this bike. It is a death trap.

Tips on assembly
By hkmark
PACKAGING AND UNBOXINGDelivered in just two days with regular shipping, the bike was packed in a single cardboard box measuring 120 x 66 x 18cm marked 'Made in Sri Lanka'.There was no invoice included. Unboxed, it appears as shown in my product photograph above. All the parts were in good condition. The front wheel, the handlebars, seat and pedals were all detached, as were the front and rear reflectors. The kit comes with two Allen keys and a wrench tool (pictured above) but you will need to provide your own Phillips screwdriver. Please also note that the tyres are deflated when delivered and a bicycle pump is not included.INSTRUCTIONS & GUARANTEEIt appears that the manual has been written only for the purpose of protecting the manufacturer and provides unhelpful details such as how many Nm of torque are required for tightening various parts, rather than explaining clearly how and in what order the parts should be assembled and which packaging parts need to be removed. As mentioned in other reviews, the black and white diagrams provide insufficient detail to understand what needs to be done.It should be noted that the Guarantee section of the manual states:"These bikes come with a 12 month guarantee that covers the replacement of any parts of the bike that brake (sic) when the bike was being used appropriately, as instructed by this manual. The guarantee does not apply if damage to the bike is caused by:CarelessnessUnusual use (2 people on the bike) even if brieflyPoor adjustmentJumpingAccidents or shocksAbusive use without prior adjustmentCompetitive use"So basically if you put the bike together without using the unintelligible manual, or subject the mountain bike to shocks by, say, mountain biking, then the guarantee won't cover you. Not a winning start by North Gear.ASSEMBLY & ADJUSTMENTS (follow at your own risk)If you are not mechanically minded, you will save a lot of time by searching and viewing the following YouTube videos before you begin, as they will assist you where the manual does not:- "How to use quick release on a bicycle" (the Iowa one contains an excellent tutorial about flipping open the brakes)- "Adjusting a V-Brake"I began with the front wheel: the quick release for the front wheel needs to be properly threaded through the front axle with the springs on either side, small ends pointing inwards. The manual does not even mention that the quick release is not yet assembled. The YouTube video above will show you how to easily flip open the front brake stirrup in order to attach the wheel and then snap them back properly.Next I fitted the rear reflector to the saddle pole and fitted the saddle.Unwinding the cables from the handlebars was necessary as they had been twisted around when packed for shipping. You then need to remove the plastic cover around the steering stem, unscrew the locking bolt on top of the stem and then slide the handle bars over the top of the stem before tightening them and then screwing back in the locking bolt at the top. Be careful not to let the forks drop while the locking bolt is out or you'll likely dislodge some of the ball bearings in the steering stem (which is why it's a good idea to put the front wheel on first and let the bike rest on its wheels while you're fitting the handlebars, but of course the manual doesn't say that either). Make sure that the handlebars are straight and are sufficiently tightened.Screwing on the pedals was simple enough. They are marked 'L' and 'R' on the threaded end.By now it's looking like a complete bike but you'll likely still need to adjust the brakes and gears, lubricate (I use 3 in 1 oil), get a bike pump and inflate the tyres to 40 psi before you can ride the thing.RIDINGI won't be using this bike off road, and have been testing it on hilly country lanes. I didn't really need to adjust the gears at all and have found gear changing to be smooth, even going uphill. The gears are changed using the twist grips in the handle bars. I did need to adjust the brakes a little, and find that now they operate without any problems at all. Mechanically the bike works fine and I am pleased with it.The saddle is okay for the first 20 minutes, but by the 40 minute mark I found that I was shifting from one side to the other to ease the discomfort. It seems that I'll need to replace the seat and get a longer seat pole to make the ride better, but for a mechanically sound mountain bike costing £100, this is not a deal breaker.CONCLUSIONThis is not a top of the range mountain bike, but considering the price, build quality and speed of delivery I am giving this bike four stars with a couple of asterisks:- North Gear has not won me over with their utterly unhelpful manual, or guarantee conditions that effectively exclude using this mountain bike on rough terrain- I'll need to replace the saddle and get a longer saddle pole, though I accept that someone else might have no problems with the saddle at all.I intend to take proper care of this bike and fully expect that it will last me for many years.

Defective in Manufacture and Damaged
By AL
This bicycle could not be safely assembled. The headset was seriously defective. The star nut was not level and centered in the steer tube. Thus, the top (sealing) cap could not be securely bolted. The gears were incorrectly cabled so it couldn't go into first or sixth gear. The brakes were cabled in reverse. The left brake lever cabled to the back brake and the right lever cabled to the front brake. The front rubber brake gaiter was split. There was missing material from one grip-shifter rubber. The plastic hub cap was broken. There were scratches on the stem. When the box was opened the handlebar and stem were not secured by cable ties and there were pieces of broken ribbed plastic in the box that were not part of the bike. The front suspension was rigid, it never moved! The quality control with respect to this bicycle is very, very poor. Also, the seller only replied to my return claim when I made an A-Z guarantee claim with Amazon. So the only good thing about this bike was that thanks to Amazon's A-Z guarantee policy I was able to return it and get my money back.
